When perusing the shelves of a grocery store, your brain becomes the enemy. Once you start thinking of what goes into the product, you are left with an empty cart. After we discovered my first son had allergies, I picked up on the ingredients listed on the back of food products instead of focusing on the nutritional values, and boy did I hit a wall. Not only were his allergens in nearly all manufactured foods, I discovered everything I was feeding my children was laden with synthetic ingredients, additives, and chemicals. I felt like the rug was swept from beneath me as my comfortable and reliable way of cooking came crashing to the floor. What was I supposed to do now? It wasn’t just a few products, it was nearly everything!
This feeling of helplessness is common when we depart from our culturally accepted norms of eating. We have been left nutritionally uneducated and indoctrinated to certain dietary beliefs. Thankfully, more and more people are becoming aware and even excited about returning to the most natural way of eating. There is help, and plenty of it. So for any parent who finds themselves in this predicament, education is key and I intend to provide as much information as possible to help you lose the fear and gain the passion back for feeding yourselves and your children.
